“I Spent Three and a Half Years in My Mother’s Womb” – Former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun

At the 25th remembrance ceremony for his late mother, Rafatu Sanusi-Amosun, former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun shared a remarkable and deeply personal story about his unusual birth. He claimed that he was carried in his mother’s womb for an astonishing three and a half years, describing the experience as nothing short of a “miracle.”

Amosun recounted the skepticism surrounding his birth, noting that many struggled to believe he was indeed human after such an extended gestation period. The event took place at the Amosun family residence in Abeokuta, where he emphasized the significance of honoring one’s parents, even after they have passed away. This value, he stated, is deeply rooted in both the Quran and the Bible.

Reflecting on the circumstances of his birth, Amosun revealed a poignant detail: “My father, who wasn’t around at the time, had arranged for fuel to burn my body if I didn’t survive.” This harrowing scenario led to his father giving him the name Duro-o-rike, which means “Stay and be given the best of care,” a name that signifies the hope and care bestowed upon him during his miraculous journey.

Amosun’s elder brother, Abidoye Amosun, supported this extraordinary narrative, recalling how their father had even sent a naming gift and letter with names for the newborn just three days before the naming ceremony, further adding credence to the tale.

During the remembrance gathering, which included Islamic leaders from Egbaland, former aides, and family members, Amosun took a moment to reflect on the transience of life. He called for prayers for his late mother and all departed souls, underscoring the importance of remembering loved ones and the legacies they leave behind.

The event was a heartfelt reminder of the significance of family, faith, and remembrance. Amosun’s story not only captivated attendees but also highlighted the enduring bond between parents and children, regardless of the circumstances of birth. As he continues to honor his mother’s memory, his reflections serve as an inspiration to cherish family ties and uphold the values taught by previous generations.
