Nigerian Military Issues Warning Against Calls for Overthrow of Government

The Nigerian military high command has issued a strong warning against individuals calling for the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s government, branding such demands as “treasonable.” This response follows a viral video in which citizens expressed their frustrations regarding the country’s economic hardships, particularly in light of recent fuel subsidy removals and the floatation of the Naira.

 Military’s Stance on Democracy

In a statement, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, condemned the calls for a military takeover, asserting that they aim to sow discord within the nation. Gusau emphasized the military’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democracy and the Tinubu administration. “The military does not have reasons to take over the government because they have enjoyed enormous support from the President,” he stated, crediting the relative peace in the country to Tinubu’s backing of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

Legal Implications of Advocating a Coup

Gusau highlighted the serious nature of advocating for a coup, clarifying that such actions are considered treasonable offenses under Nigeria’s Constitution. Those found guilty of promoting an unconstitutional change of government will face severe legal consequences. He reassured the public of the military’s loyalty to the elected government, stating, “The AFN is steadfastly committed to the preservation and advancement of our democracy.”

 Focus on National Security

The military’s commitment extends to working with other security agencies to address any groups or individuals promoting unconstitutional changes. Gusau concluded by reinforcing the military’s role in protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and upholding democratic governance.

As tensions rise over economic issues, this warning underscores the military’s dedication to maintaining stability and order in Nigeria. The situation serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between civil discourse and the rule of law in a democratic society.
